64 Songs and Ballads
4 I hired to work in the lumber woods,
Where they cut those tall spruce down; And 't was loading two sleds on a yard I received a mortal wound.
5 Here's adieu unto Prince Edward's Isle,
That garden in the sea; No more I'll walk its flowery banks To enjoy a summer's breeze.
6 No more I'll watch those gallant ships,
As they go sailing by, With the streamers floating in the breeze Far above the canvas high,
7 Here's adieu unto my father;
'T was him who sent me here; I thought he used me most unkind, His treatments were severe.
8 It is not right to press a boy
Or to try and keep him down; For it ofttimes drives him from his house When he is far too young.
9 Here's adieu unto my greater friend,
I mean my mother dear. She raised a son, who fell as soon As he left his mother's care.
io For little did my mother know, When she sung lullaby What countries I might travel in, Or what death I might die. |
